YPN members finally met in person during WGB 59

The first week of Working Group B (WGB) 59 was eventful for the CTBT Young Professionals Network (YPN). After two years of only virtual interactions, network members finally had the opportunity to meet in person and get to know each other. Here is a summary of the YPN Lunch Meeting and Afterwork @ CopaBeach!

Introduction round and brainstorming at the YPN Lunch Meeting

On 23 August, the Young Professionals Network organised a hybrid Lunch Meeting. Those present at Vienna International Centre (VIC) enjoyed a great lunch from Eurest Catering, and thanks to the supportive CTBTO technicians, other YPN members could participate virtually. The conference room at VIC was equipped with a large screen, making it possible to interact with members joining from elsewhere.

YPN coordinator Helena Jensby gave an update on the development of the network, which has grown substantially in terms of member count, as well as opportunities for networking, knowledge-exchange, and scientific and professional growth in the last year.

During the following introduction round, “Meet the Young Professionals”, members talked about their background, current work and job responsibilities, prior participation in WGB, and hobbies outside of work. It turns out the young professionals have more than a passion for science and technology in common – they are also dedicated foodies and hikers.

YPN members Paolo Tristan Cruz and Ana Aguiar presented scientific topics for the network. Paolo is originally from the Philippines and works at the CTBTO as Associate Operations Officer (IDC/OPS). He presented current work in the International Data Centre (IDC) and previous research using International Monitoring System (IMS) data and IDC products. Ana comes from Costa Rica and works for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Illustrating with slides, she explained a study on the Application of a Dynamic Correlation Processor for International Monitoring System (IMS) Detection Screening.

Towards the end of the meeting, YPN project manager Helene Ruud welcomed suggestions from the members concerning YPN participation during SnT 2023. At SnT 2021, the Young Professionals Network had a successful online side event and panel debate on new technological developments and verification. The network plans to show greater presence at next year’s conference, and another meeting will soon be set up to continue discussions and finalize plans.

Chatting and soaking up the last bit of Summer at the Afterwork @ Copa Beach

After participating in WGB 59 Expert Group meetings at VIC on 24 Aug, the CTBT Young Professionals members and mentors headed down to the Donauinsel to chat and enjoy the sunny weather.

CopaBeach is just 10 minutes from Kaisermühlen and offers a relaxing atmosphere and riverside views. It was a beautiful afternoon for catching up and talking about leisure, WGB, and work!
